Position Description

The Department of Medicine in partnership with the O’Brien Institute for Public Health, Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary invites applications for a qualified Adult Infectious Diseases physician with expertise in antimicrobial stewardship and applied health economics research. This position is for a Contingent Term full-time academic position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to contribute to the academic and clinical mission of the University of Calgary, Alberta Health Services (including the zonal and provincial antimicrobial stewardship and the infection prevention programs as they relate to health economics) and the Infectious Disease Division especially in the area of the Outpatient Parenteral Antibiotic Treatment Program.

Qualifications include an MD and a minimum of a MSc graduate degree, in the area of applied health economics, and certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Internal Medicine, specializing in Infectious Diseases or equivalent certification from another professional association. Additional formal training in the area of antimicrobial stewardship is required. Candidates must have evidence of strong clinical training, a strong publication record and evidence of an emerging academic program of research. At the Assistant Professor level, the candidate’s Curriculum Vita must document evidence of academic scholarship, with at least 12 peer reviewed publications to date, with the candidate being either first or senior author on approximately half of these.

All members of the Infectious Diseases Division provide clinical service and teach at all levels of medical education. This position offers 65% protected time for research. The administrative responsibilities of this position are minimal. The position provides an excellent opportunity to develop and expand an independent externally-funded program. It is expected that the successful candidate will collaborate with other health service researchers, infectious disease researchers, Infection Prevention and Control researchers, antimicrobial stewardship researcher and the Outpatient Parenteral Antibiotic Treatment Program. An ability to focus on research on the economic benefits of diagnostic and treatment decisions related to antimicrobial use with a focus on cost savings and resource utilization in both the inpatient and ambulatory settings. From a One Health perspective, this would provide a unique niche area for a productive research platform and make an important contribution to the research community within the Cumming School of Medicine and Alberta Health Services.
