Alberta Health Economics Study Group 2020
The Alberta Health Economics Study Group (AHESG) aims to bring together Alberta based health economists for a day of lively discussion about current research and will provide an opportunity for networking. The objective of AHESG meetings is to promote a study group atmosphere despite large numbers. All papers are pre-circulated and discussed in 40-minute long sessions using discussants rather than author presentations. This session will focus on the research of students and trainees and will be a great opportunity to get feedback on early draft papers. The AHESG welcomes people from all backgrounds with an interest in Health Economics.
Keynote Speakers
Presenter: Erin Kirwin, Health Economist, MA Economics
Topic: Real Time Epidemiological Modelling to inform the COVID-19 Pandemic Response
Abstract: The first section of this keynote presentation, Erin Kirwin will describe the COVID-19 Risk Assessment Model (CRAM), a dynamic compartmental epidemiological model which was developed to support decision making in Alberta. The discussion will focus on the challenges of modelling an ongoing pandemic, the strengths and limitations of epidemiological modelling, lessons learned, and future directions.
Presenter Biography: Erin Kirwin holds a BA (Hons) from McGill University and a MA in Economics from the University of Alberta. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Health Economics at the University of Manchester. Prior to joining the IHE in July 2019, Erin was the Manager of Advanced Analytics at Alberta Health and held the position of Public Health Economist with Alberta Health since 2011.
Presenter: Larry Svenson, Provincial Health Analytics Officer and Executive Director for Analytics and Performance Reporting at Alberta Health, MD
Topic: Perspectives on Turning Evidence into Policy
Abstract: In the second part of the keynote, Dr. Svenson will discuss the breadth of the analytic response at Alberta Health. He will share perspectives on how data and evidence, such as evidence from the CRAM, is used within the decision-making process.
Presenter Biography: Larry Svenson is the Provincial Health Analytics Officer and Executive Director for Analytics and Performance Reporting at Alberta Health. He is responsible for working with internal and external stakeholders to strengthen the analytic capacity of Alberta’s health sector, and the promotion of a data driven culture. Larry is also an Associate Professor with the Division of Preventive Medicine at the University of Alberta, and holds Adjunct Professor appointments with the University of Alberta School of Public Health and University of Calgary Cumming School of Medicine. He holds a PhD from Manchester Metropolitan University and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health in 2016. He brings over 25 years of experience in the use of administrative health data for health policy development and evaluation, and is a strong advocate for open data initiatives
